What are word by word captions?
Word by word captions show the spoken words on screen one at a time, or in short groups, each one appearing exactly when it is said. On oVideo you upload a video, the AI transcribes it with a timestamp for every word, and you choose how many words show at once (1 to 6) and a style such as MrBeast or Karaoke. The captions are burned into an MP4 that keeps your video’s aspect ratio, up to 1080p.

Ideas
Where word by word captions work best
- Talking head reels. Tips, opinions and storytimes where every word should land, even on mute.
- Podcast and interview clips. The best minute of an episode, with the speaker’s words popping up in time.
- Tutorials and demos. Short how to videos that viewers can follow with the sound off.
- UGC style ads. Bold MrBeast or Impact captions that keep the hook readable in the first seconds.
Better results
Captions that keep up with the voice
- One word at a time suits fast, punchy clips; 2 or 3 words read easier for slower speech and longer videos.
- Move the captions up from the bottom edge, where TikTok and Reels place their buttons and text.
- Check names, brands and slang in the transcript before you export; the AI hears them, you know the spelling.
- Clear speech with quiet background music gives the most accurate word timing.
Answers
Frequently asked questions
- How do I make word by word captions?
- Upload your video to the oVideo Subtitle Generator. The AI transcribes the speech and times every single word. Set "words per group" to 1 for one word at a time (or up to 6), pick a style such as MrBeast or Karaoke, fix any word, and export an MP4 with the captions burned in.
- Can captions show one word at a time?
- Yes. Words per group goes from 1 to 6. At 1, each word appears on its own exactly when it is spoken; at 2 or 3 you get short phrases with the spoken word highlighted, depending on the style.
- How do I make karaoke captions where each word lights up?
- Choose the Karaoke preset. A colour sweep fills each word from left to right for as long as it is spoken, timed from the audio. You can change the base colour, the sweep colour, the font and the outline.
- Is it free?
- A new free account can caption 3 videos with no watermark and no card. The free plan is not available in some countries (much of South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa); there, the first video already needs a paid plan. After the free videos, each video costs 5, 10 or 20 credits, depending on its length.
- How much do word by word captions cost?
- 5 credits for a video up to 1 minute, 10 credits up to 5 minutes and 20 credits up to 10 minutes, charged once when the speech is transcribed. Exporting costs nothing extra. Starter is $10 a month for 400 credits, so a video up to 1 minute costs about $0.13.
- Which caption styles and fonts are there?
- 10 presets: MrBeast, Karaoke, Classic, Neon Glow, Minimal, Impact, Elegant, Street, Pastel and Fire, and 13 fonts including Komika Axis, Anton, Bebas Neue, Montserrat and Poppins. You can change the size, colours, outline, position and words per line of any preset.
- Is this a CapCut word by word captions alternative?
- Yes, it does the same job in the browser, with no app to install: 1 to 6 words at a time, a karaoke sweep, every word editable and an MP4 in your video’s own aspect ratio, up to 1080p. The differences in CapCut’s own words: its auto caption page says videos may be converted to text free of charge and the captions translated into other languages (checked October 2026). oVideo also translates captions into 28 languages with Translate Subtitles, and gives 3 free videos where the free plan is offered.
- Can it translate the captions into another language?
- Yes, with Translate Subtitles. It translates the captions into one of 28 languages, timed to the original speech, for the subtitle price plus 10 credits per language (20 for videos over 5 minutes) on paid plans. The word by word styles work on the translated captions too. Arabic speech cannot be transcribed yet.
- Can I download an SRT file of the captions?
- Yes, with Create SRT, which gives SRT and VTT files for the same price as subtitles. The word by word tool itself burns the captions into an MP4, which is what TikTok, Reels and Shorts show; an SRT file is what you upload as a separate caption track, for example in YouTube Studio.
- Will the video keep its quality and size?
- Yes. The captions are burned in and the video keeps the aspect ratio you upload, vertical, landscape or square, up to 1080p (a 4K upload comes out in 1080p), with no watermark.
